IDSA Trends & Strategies seminar
Design: The New Frontier
April 6, 2001 Seattle, WA

The objective of the seminar was to co-create the landscape of key trends that are relevant to what we design, and how we design. Specifically, we focused on trends in:

Technology: new architectures and materials of products, and new tools for the design process.
Lifestyle: changes in customer characteristics, preferences, and behavior.
Business Practices: transformations in consulting and partnerships, and in business propositions.

Drawing information from research presentations by the seminar coordinators, and from participant input during breakout groups, 18 technology, 10 lifestyle, and 20 business trends were identified.

Participants arranged the trends into three rows, according to when they would occur: happening now, nascent, or distant. Each participant was given five votes, and marked the trends they believed would have the greatest impact.

Voted as the most important trend by far, was the nascent lifestyle trend "customer desire for a greater quality of life".
